Did you know that June is Caribbean (American) Heritage Month?
If you didn't, now you do! Following a 2006 Presidential proclamation, June was officially declared Caribbean (American) Heritage Month in the United States. The commemorative month aims to recognize the contributions of Caribbean immigrants to US history and to foster continued cultural exchange and dialogue.
The American has been purposely put in parentheses above, because in the 14 years since its inception the celebration has moved from solely focusing on the Caribbean-American connection to Caribbean heritage in general.
This year, to celebrate, Speakeasy Solutions will be launching online the Caribbean Reading Circle (CRC). The CRC is a space highlighting Caribbean-centred literature for young readers. Starting on June 7th, 2020, we'll be sharing read alouds on our YouTube Channe - look out for new episodes every Sunday at 5pm EST. Each book featured is from our library and written by a Caribbean author. These are books that we use regularly with students and are some of our favorite stories.
As a bonus, we'll be giving away FREE printables with each read aloud which can be accessed on our website. The books and activities are recommended for children aged 7-12.
Finally, since we're focusing on opening dialogue, answer the following question in the comments so we can start the month off right!
Question: What Caribbean heritage mean to you?
Stay tuned!
